de Marlene Monteiro Freitas

When Marlène Monterio Freitas adapts the Greek tragedy Euripides, the show is total. Between carnival, crazy cabaret and Dada concert, the Cape Verdean artist’s show is a lively catharsis as much as a ode to letting go, an anthem to madness. The Bacchae were women worshipping Dionysus (or Bacchus for the Romans), the God of wine, excessiveness and immoderation. In fact, Marlene Monteiro Freitas’ work talks a lot about excessiveness. Fascinated by carnival – a rite deeply anchored in her native Cape Verde, the choreographer has an inextinguishable hunger for masks, grimace, colours and the energy of disorder. So the play unfolds like an orgiastic celebration for the party god. On stage, eight dancers and five trumpet players all wearing white clothes do mime and impression one after another. Masculine becomes feminine (and vice versa), music stands become guns or guitars. In some very organized chaos, performers and audience open themselves to euphoria.
