Claire Dancoisne | Victor Hugo

Much less famous than Quasimodo or Cosette, Gwynplaine remains one of Hugo’s renowned characters. He is the hero in The Man Who Laughs – a novel published in 1869. Claire Dancoisne expresses thanks to object theatre both the « grotesqueness and sublime » of human nature.

Late 17th century England. Gangs maimed children to turn them into circus freaks. One day, they abandoned a boy they disfigured – his mouth is split open to the ears in an undying smile. Fifteen years later, Gwynplaine became the most famous freak of the circus… The Théâtre la Licorne amazingly adapts with its unique hand this baroque epic. Gwynplaine is performed by a glove puppet to perfectly incarnate his deformity. And yet, in this world freaks aren’t who they seem…
